Design Production - ISTD Brief - Workshop

5 Problems you need to solve.

5 reasons why you want to solve these problems.

1. How will you create an overall Brand for a Typographically themed restaurant including logo, product, interior, exterior, web and print?

I want to solve this through typography to give a restaurant an identity and help them stand out amongst  their competitors.

2. How will you emphasise and bring back the appeal of dining in a restaurant?

I want to solve this to make dinging in a restaurant a special and enjoyable experience.

3. How will the restaurant be promoted?

I want to solve this by creating promotion around the whole brand in order to make the restaurant stand out against its competitors.

4. How will type be used within the brand identity and help promote all aspects of the business?

I want to solve this by creating promotion around the whole brand.

5. How will the exterior, interior and environment be worked into the identity to create a multi-sensory enjoyable experience within the restaurant?

5 Facts about your subject.

1. Dining in restaurants is still a special occasion and appealing experience.

2. The visual identity of the restaurant has a direct effect on wether a customer will choose to dine there.

3. The interior and exterior and environment of a restaurant can also have a direct effect on the diners experience.

4. A successful promotion and advertising campaign can lead to more interest in a a particular restaurant. (eg. Nando's)

5. It's important that typography should be used throughout the restaurants visual identity and this could also influence the target audience.

6. We don't need any more food programs, just more restaurants.

5 Facts you don't know about the brief.

1. Why is there a need for a typography based restaurant.

2. Are there any existing similar themed restaurants.

3. Why are these successful or unsuccessful? And why are other restaurants who would be competitors successful and unsuccessful?

4. What makes a successful restaurant brand and identity?

5. How can I be consistent within creating an eating environment (exterior/interior) and across a number of channels (Web and Print based products)

5 Things about the audience.

1. Typography lovers and Designers in general.

2. Good Quality Food (Not Cheap).

3.  Late 20's to Early 40's age range.

4. Primarily male.

5. Contemporary Diners who regularly like to eat out and try new things.

5 Ideas that you want to communicate through this brief.

1. A marriage between the passion for Typography and the passion for Food, combined in one place.

2. A multi-sensory experience for the diner.

3. A contemporary restaurant that can fit in in the 'trendy' areas of the world.

4. Emphasise the appeal of dining out in a restaurant and how this makes a special occasion.

5. Context and placement of the restaurant is well considered.

5 Deliverables (Print & Web)

- A Website that will inform the customers of where the restaurant is, what the restaurant is about, the menu and prices.

Home Page / About,  Menu/Prices,  Contact & Map, Gallery.

- A Menu (Long & Thin - Consider Stocks, Antique Stock with overlaid trace to accent typography)

An idea would be  having a plastic stencil so that the customers can use typography themselves to order their food.

- Exterior/Interior Design (Apply the Brand to the outside and inside of the restaurant (This will be a proposal).

An Idea would be to use Large Typography across the walls and keep this the main focus.

- A Brand ( A Logo, A Colour Scheme and use of Type)

-  A Receipt Holder, Business CardLetterhead and any other stationary that may be necessary. These will keep a consistent theme which will relate to the menu.

5 Points of Distribution

- A Website (Promotion)
- Posters and Flyers (Promotion)
- Signage & Wayfinding - Interior & Exterior - Toilets, Bar Etc  (Getting people into the Restaurant)
- Apps / Mobile Phone
- Town Centres / Promotion Boards

Design

- How big will it be a full building or small. You can propose anything as long as it is visually mocked up.

- Give enough time to make things.
