BRIEF |
Based on the data, information and source material that you have collected in response to Part 1 of this brief produce a visual/graphic investigation of the communication of '100 things you need to know about' your chosen content. 1 - CATEGORISE: the development of you response to this brief will require you o explore a range of ways of combining, categorising and expanding the facts, figures, statistics and visual material that you have gathered in order to find and explore new knowledge and areas of interest. Throughout this process you will need to exploit opportunities to develop further research, investigate new lines of inquiry and gather new source material.2 - COMMUNICATE: Having explored a range of possible approaches to the organisation, interpretation and categorisation of your source material, design and produce a set, series or sequence of 10 related graphic products that effectively communicate an informative response to your content. Your resolutions should be print based, focus on the relationship between type and image and explore their function within the visual communication of content. Your products/resolutions can take many different forms dependent on its content, function, audience and context. How will this affect the decisions that you make about format, scale, media etc....? |
Background / Considerations |
Research activities primarily involves the discovery of knowledge that was previously unknown, unrecognised or understood. The motivation of research therefore should be to find points of interest that can be used to develop awareness and understanding of identified concerns or specific issues. As a graphic designer your role is to consider what information is necessary and how to use your understanding of design to effectively deliver it in an appropriate, meaningful but innovative way in order to maintain interest. Having decided on the content that you find interesting you should focus on the practical, formal and conceptual development of possible design solutions. You should consider the relationship between content, categories, organisation, media and form. How does one affect the other? Who is your audience and how can you engage with them? How will they interact with your product? What are you trying to achieve? What is the function of your product – is it supposed to inform, educate, document, entertain or instruct? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
After receiving the brief and the talk that Fred deleivered. i have already got some good ideas in my head that i have jotted down in my notebook of where i want to take this project.
Firstly though, it is essential that i begin to categorise and sort through my research to see what is useful for me to use in my project and what i need to discard. I will also most definitely have to do further bits of research into certain things when my ideas develop further.
Workshop
We had a workshop which helped us look at starting to categorise some of the information.
We looked at dividing our main theme up into smaller sub sections
We was asked to create little icons that could represent the theme.
We was also asked to create a book title for our theme and sub-themes followed by 10 chapters under each theme, just to start to bring the information together and help categorise it.
I feel this workshop has helped me bring the information together as a whole, see what fits with each other and what won't work. It has also helped me spawn some ideas for where i may take this project.
I will continue to categorise the information further and also do further research where necessary.
Here are some pictures of my ideas in from the workshop...
