GOOD DESIGN - DUM DUM GIRLS - GIG POSTER
This is the poster i will be investigating for GOOD design. Created by Kate Prior
All of the type in this poster seems to be hand-drawn in a illustrative manor which fits in well with the rest of the design. I like illustrative designs like this as it all fits as one, rather than trying to combine image and type, it just naturally seems to fit here, the artist has achieved really well!
Hierarchy of size
EXTRA LARGE - Band Name
Obviously the most important piece of information on the poster so it is understandable to be this big and take up a large selection. Also looks like it has been written in the black lipstick which the imagery shows. This works well again, linking the imagery and type.
The rest of the font is all quite a large amount smaller than the band title. They are all slightly different sizes as it looks to be hand-drawn but there isn't really one that is read before another. Maybe left to right i would say just becasue of where the text is placed on the perfume bottles, you generally read left to right.
REGULAR - Date/Venue
The dates and venue seem to be the next biggest bit of type which would seem obvious. All type is in the same hand-drawn style of font and is all very legible.
SMALL - Date Etc.
These continue the same typeface, slightly smaller but still legible.
EXTRA SMALL -Ticket Info
Again this time using the bolder typeface all in capitals for the smaller type making it easier to read. The '£7' is made larger than the rest of the information about ticket prices and where to buy tickets.
EXTRA EXTRA SMALL - Time
Finally, the smallest type is the time the gig starts. It is still clearly readable but does sort of get lost within the image as it has been cleverly placed on the face of the watch.
AVERAGE DESIGN - WASHED OUT - GIG POSTER
I chose this poster for the average design. I don't hate the design of this, i actually think it is reasonable, not amazing, but also not bad. I like the same font used throughout, keeping it simple. The large text for the band name works well when placed over the faded image behind. It does the job!
EXTRA LARGE - Band Name
Again, much like the last design, the band name is the biggest type on the page, taking up large amounts of space on the A3 poster, almost half in fact. The colour and choice of type is clear and relevant to the style of music of the band.
REGULAR -
The next largest text is considerably smaller than the main feature. I like the way it uses the same font throughout the entire layout. The date and venue is the next piece of text your eyes wonder too. This keeps it to the point so you can instantly pick up the information when you walk past it in the street.
Around the similar size to this is the promoter's name and this is placed above the 'WASHED OUT' type. This is relevant and where you would expect it as it says presents... so would obviously be above the band title.
All type is layout out central down the middle of the poster which looks neat and professional, to the point.
SMALL - Tickets/Times Etc...
Even smaller still now at the very bottom of the poster is the website details, ticket details and time of the gig. These are all fairly important things but again you would expect them to be smaller because it is something you would only want to read if you stopped to look.
BAD DESIGN - CLOUD CONTROL - GIG POSTER
I don't like this gig poster for the band cloud control at all. I think the imagery does not work well as a background. The font choice is horrible and there are far too many fonts chose. Just looks really unprofessional and amateurish to me. However the same concept to text placement and heirachies has been applied to this as the previous two, more or less.
LARGE - Band Name
Obviously the band name would be the largest type on the poster. The text is quite a hippie retro style which relates to the style of the band and the bands previous logo's.
REGULAR - Date/Venue
The next largest peice of test is below the band name 'Autumn Tour' which i suppose is also pretty important, informing the people of the time of year they are playing. Again another font has been used here. I think this font is 'Bebas' but i'm not 100%. I do like this font but in correlation with the other two fonts it just does not fit at all.
The date and venue is roughly the same size of the font above but this time they have gone for what looks like 'Arial'. I don't know why they have chose so many different fonts but the size of the font is clear and is the second biggest thing you see after the title so it does do the job, just badly.
SMALL - Ticket Price and more
Less important information still is using these two completely different fonts but this time have been made smaller almost by half the size of the last type. The white text looks ok for the ticket pice information but starts to become illegible for the other two pieces of information in the 'Bebas' font.
EXTRA SMALL - Tick Info/Website
More information is smaller still. The white type seems to work ok but i can barley make out the website at the bottom mainly because the colour is far to similar to the background image.
EXTRA EXTRA SMALL - More Wesbsites
More websites have been added even smaller at the very bottom of the page. This is been done ok. The font is legible and so is the colour on the dark background. The information is at the bottom of the hierarchy just because its only their if people really want to fin out more information on the band.
