Design For Print - Final Crit

Strengths

- Using Bright and Bold colours for each booklet helps distinguish them from each other and helps them work as a set. It also makes it interesting to read

- Embossing added textural feel to the packaging and each of the books and also relates to the print processes. A lot of effort put into the crafting of the packaging and books.

- Use of grid is very effective and body copy is displayed neatly clearly and concise.

- Experimental layouts work well and keeps the publications interesting to read.

- Really good amount of research and quantity as well as quality.

- Colour scheme allows for clear differentiation between print topics and easy to reference.

- Not too much body copy in areas which makes it appeal to the target audience. It's easy to use as quick reference for designers.

- The 'Sliced' Type for headers works really well.

Improvements

- Diagrams could work better with some labelling just to make them a little bit easier to understand.

- Watch the spacing on the text at the left edge of the page. I think this is just because it is a mock up though!

- A couple of the headers are difficult to read because the 'h' and 'b' look similar.

Considerations

- What are the reasons for the colour scheme? and how does it link to content?

- How would the two boxes come as a set? would they be work together or could they come separately?

- Is the stock book going to be in the pack or separate?

- Not sure which way up the books are from the mock-ups?

My comments

Fairly pleased with the feedback I received for this because I was expecting to get slated for being too 'contemporary'. Overall the comments are really positive which means that I wont have to change anything major when it comes to getting it ready to print.

Just to comment directly on the comments such as the reasoning for the colour scheme. This can be backed up on my boards if read where I mention that I used the colour gamut with good relation to the whole content about colour for print.

The spacing in areas needs to be nudged around slightly because some pages look a little umbalanced. This can easily be fixed when I go through the documents making final changes. Also this goes for the typos, hyphenations, americanisms and all that jazz.

I will need to make sure I strictly proof read and sort everything out. A good point is that I have printed black and white mock-ups which means that I can easily go through, highlight mistakes and the mac up the changes later.

Also, the comment about which way the book is up being unsure. This will become clear when I emboss the front covers which will make it easy to see which is the front and which way around it is. i purposely wanted the colours to be mainly colour with the accent of embossing because it directly relates to both colour for print and print techniques.

Overall, I am happy with the conclusion of this project, I just need to spend a couple more hours making sure everything is perfect before i can send it to print.
