Summer Brief Extension - Promotional Work for The US Open

For the extension of my summer brief, I decided to create fictional promotional work for 'The US Open'  which is pretty current as it ended only a few weeks ago. I thought that I could use the basis of my initial research and design development in order for me to extend on this to create a very small re-brand promotional work for the Grand Slam Tournament.

The strict guidelines of the brief meant that I had to create a poster that isn't an 'A Format' size, A flyer that isn't a standard front and back print flyer and also one other graphic product of my choice.

For the development of the poster, I tried out quite a few different design decisions using the same images that i had previously used in my summer brief and sticking to a similar colour scheme. Below are some designs that didn't work out as well...

I quite liked this design at first but then after taking a second look at it, felt that it didn't promote the event well at all and looked a little bit too messy.

I experimented with a few different other layouts and really liked how i laid out the players behind the image of Rafael Nadal. I decided to stick with this layout, but work into it more.

I felt like my design was getting somewhere with this one. i liked the colour scheme which i brought through from the summer project but still felt that it needed more working into. I wasn't sure about the typeface that I used and looked into create a new, more contemporary logo for the brand new tournament of The US Open 2012.

From the original logo above, I wanted to simplify this down I did this by converting the swoop of the tennis ball into a straight line to represent the divide of the tennis court. I then abbreviated the name to USO which brings the tournament to the 21st century whilst still containing elements of the original logo as well as enough information to understand what it represents when placed in the right context.

I also moved onto experimenting with different layouts for my flyer. I wanted to create something different so mocked up a few different templates before i went on to re-creating the chosen template in In-Design, then starting to design into this. This was the original design that I came up with below, but after creating the logo and new colour scheme for the poster, I altered it to fit the theme...
