Here is the body copy that i derived from the interview. I tried to reword the questions so it sounded more like a chat which is what you would more likely to get in a magazine interview...
Emma Johnson is a 22 Year old graphic designer currently in her first year of a Graphic Design BA (Hons) course at Leeds College Of Art. She is influenced by the environment and creates a lot of work based around the eco-friendly side of design. This includes using recycled materials and trying to promote a greener lifestyle that is true to her ethics. She takes the time out of her hectic schedule to talk to us about life, design, animals and people...
Where are you from?
"I'm from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, near the Dales."
That sounds nice. Tell us about it?
"It is nice, I like it. It's a really nice area and a nice community but it is very expensive!"
What is your earliest memory?
"I think it was when i was in nursery, we was playing outside as you do at that age and out of nowhere a girl just bit and latched onto my finger. I think that i remember that because of the pain, it wasn't the greatest experience as a little kid."
That sounds horrible, what happened to the girl?
"I don't really know (laughs) I think she probably got told of by the teacher and maybe her mum. She probably didn't mean it so i'll let her off."
Which living person do you admire the most and why?
"It has to be David Attenborough. He is such a pioneer in what he does. I'm an animal and wildlife lover myself and think that he does such a good job for both animals and helping to make the world a better place in general."
So you like animals? How about Cats and Dogs? Which is your favourite?
"I love animals, i do love both cats and dogs but i would have to say cats. I have a cat at home who is part of the family. I think i just like them because they are more relaxed than dogs and you can cuddle up with them."
How about if you could bring something back that was extinct. What would it be?
"Staying on the cat theme, it would have to be a Sabertooth Tiger. They are just a massive cat, almost the ulitimate cat! (laughs)."
Okay, so where would you like to live most in the world?
"San Fransico. It is just amazing. I'd live by the seaside and spend my days in the sun. I'd probably become a surfer girl and i probably wouldn't get any work done either so maybe that would have to be in retirement hopefully. "
What is your most unappealing Habit?
"I don't think i have any really bad habits. I don't smoke or bite my nails. I would probably say falling asleep. I tend to do that quite a lot."
Falling Asleep? That's a Little bit of an odd habit? How about your ultimate superpower?
"It would have to be flying, i could maybe fly around San Fransico on a sunny day. "
Yeah, that sounds pretty good! you would have to make sure you didn't fall asleep though!
What is Your Favourite Word?
"Bobble. Don't ask me why i just like it!"
How about your favourite book?
"Probably one called The Tiger That Went To Tea. I like it because it brings back childhood memories."
Before you go, Tell us a little bit about your work, what inspires you?
"Well as you can tell from a lot of my work, it is in some way inspired by keeping the world green. I wouldn't say i'm the biggest Horticulturalist but my boyfriend seems to think he's abit of an 'Eco Warrior' so maybe i am influenced by him. I love animals too, and you'll probably see that coming through my work, whenever i get the chance! (laughs)."
Thanks Emma, look forward to seeing some of your work in the near future!
I have created a couple of design sheets. I wanted to do this instead of designing straight into illustrator so i could play around with a few different ideas before i settle on one final design. I tried to go down the eco-friendly route and add imagery in where it fits but unltimatly i want to keep it neat a simple. I think Emma is quite a reserved and 'neat' character but underneath has some but moral views so i will try to keep a good balance in my spread...
I have also collected some imagery both from her blog and Facebook that i can use on my final spread. I want to include around 3-6 pieces depending on what layout i choose.
These images where her final products taken from the '100 Things' brief. I feel that these reflect the eco-friendly morals of Emma perfectly.
'Helveticat' brief on cats.
From this, i get a real sense of Emma's style. I want to portray her work through the spread i create and create kind of a designers profile about her. I have decided that i will focus on her ethics and morals. Mainly on the eco-friendly side to her and the fact that she loves animals, and cats. I will portray how this comes through her work and create a fitting spread that includes images of her work and that is in the style of her work.
I am now ready to move into Indesign with this.
