Originally i wanted my final typeface on a grey background, and was going to use a grey stone paper stock with the black printed off.
When i did smaller samples, the stock i used didn't look good when printed. The grey was slightly darker, you couldn't really see the black letterforms that are already quite obscure (not your ordinary typeface). Also the grey didn't really make the type pop which i wasn't pleased with
In the end i went for the white background. Again using the small sample, a thick cartridge paper seemed to work best. The background was not shockingly white but a more off white. The black still really pops from this and the washed out look behind is a really nice texture for it to sit on.
The grid format i chose to go with was a slanted to the right look. I attempted to line the letters up in a standard grid format in illustrator but it didn't look right at all (see image below). By doing it this way i think it takes the natural shape and line of the type and just looks RIGHT when you view it. I also moved the letters around on a slightly different angle to make it fit better in the A1 format.
