OUGD505 - What Is Good - Guest Invitations

I decided to create invitations for guests to the festivals award cermony. I was researching different formats and process surrounding paper and paper craft and really wanted to try and create a perforated pull tab, so the idea was to have some subtley to the outside of the invite, then when you peel the tab back, it shows what it is for, 'The British Independent Film Festival'.

Design

You can see how this works from the initial design here. I wanted to continue the British conversational tone which was at the very heart of the brand. I settles with this simple but of type, 'We would be over the moon if you'd join us'. I think this will get people interested in opening the invite up and it certainly will stand out in the post.

Close ups show how the user will interact with the perforated tab, pulling it open to reveal the name of the festival.

Mock Ups

I  created an actual size paper mock up to see if the functionality of the format would work and be appropriate for what I wanted to portray

The pull tab will run through the middle of the invite and there will be a gap created to make it easier to pull straight across.

The type will appear when the tab is pulled across and the invite will open up to reveal the other necessary information.

Prototype

Here was the first prototype. As you can see there are a couple of mistakes that needed altering for the finals. The main one, is that I hadn't carefully planned the front and back print which meant that the inside was upside down when opened. This was easily altered but it was annoying that I made this error in the first place, especially after making the mock-up.

Mechanism

You can see from this set of images how the mechanism of the perforated pull tab works. I created grooves evenly that have been pre-cut. This made enough movement in the lines for the paper to stay together, but was also really easy to peel away. I am really happy with how this has come out. I just need to be a little bit more careful with cutting it out for the finals.

Finals

This is how the invite appears when first received. You don't really notice the perforated edges at first glance, but the type on the front gets you instantly intrigued.

You can see where the edge of the perforation makes it easier to pull open.

Once pulled open, The information on the inside is revealed to the guest with information on the award ceremony with the rsvp details.
