____Box

So as a  project over christmas, I decided to craft the box and bottle myself so i could get some good quality photographs of the product and range in context.

I started by getting hold of some cheap tongue and groove wood which i had to cut down and slot together to create the sides and lid of the box...

As you can see in the image below, I used the original digital mock-up for the shape of the box inluding the wooden stripps across the lid which held the wood together and also acted as handles. I was pretty pleased with the outcome of this, it looked quite authentic but I decided to go on to damage and varnish the wood to give it an 'older' looking feel...

I used any old tools and nails to damage, scratch into and carve out bits of the wood to make it look like it might have been well travelled from cuba. I then applied some standard dark wood varnish which I found lying around. It seemed to do a great job seeing as I was quite new to varnishing wood...

I applied the designs taken from my digital mock up to be made into stencils. I has to hand cut these out because I didn't have the facilities of a laser cutter which required some patience but I got there in the end...

I first applied to the two longer sides of the box, the original phrases used for Bacardi. I covered all the open pieces of wood and used black spray paint. It turned out more successful than i thought it would, especially with the hand crafted letters...

I then moved onto the shorter sides and used the diamond logo which I had previously created, with the B & Ca lettering...

My box was nearly complete. I just needed to get the vintage bat logo onto the lid which in the end I hand drew with marker pen using an image as reference...

So, this is the final box. I added straw to the inside of it to give it a more realistic feel of padding to protect the glass bottle. It also works well aesthetically for the items to sit on when displayed in a bar. I plan to photograph the products properly when i have the full range of contents and in a correct environment, such as a bar...

____Bottle

For the bottle, I wanted to print white ink onto transparent clear stickers which proved to be a bit more expensive to send off for than what i first assumed. I then was going to screen print onto the clear transfer, but didn't have the facilities to do this unfortunately and was scared that it might not take on the greasy surface. In the end, I used a paint marker to hand draw the type on. This wasn't the most accurate method but it did what I wanted in the fact that it represents how the bottle would look. I could also neaten this up digitally in photoshop after the final photographs have been taken. I used masking tape in order to get a neat as possible representation...

Once I had completed this, I then put the contents into the box. I had two jars to serve the rum and coke in, and this is possibly how it could be displayed in a bar environment. I brewed some tea to put in the bottle as rum but it appeared too cloudy so I might have to change the contents to ice tea or something which takes a more accurate appearance of spiced rum ...
