Design Production - Mutton Quad - Foiling & Spot Varnish Experiments

I decided to do some foiling experimentation to see how my logo might look foiled on different types of stock. Originally, I wanted to use some red foil because I didn't want to deter away from the original brand colours. I was running on quite strict guidelines for the logo to be used in black and red.

However, in the time, I couldn't seem to get hold of any red foil, so I went for the next relevant for foiling which would have been silver or gold. I felt that as my branding was quite luxurious, gold would be appropriate if used in the right way...

Foiling

I had never done foiling before and didn't know how east this method was. It was obviously not perfect but I was really impressed with the results I got. As you can see form the image above and the ones below, I tested the foiling on my logo of various sizes to see how small I could take it before it didn't take. I could easily go as small as needed for my finals, which was great. You can see how some of the experiments came out below.

This is the final size I will be using for the letterhead. It's around an inch in circumference and as you see has come out really well on the white stock.

I also tried the smaller version on my logo which would be on the letterhead. This also came out really well. There is slight texture created if you look closely from where the foil hasn't taken, but I kind of like this.

The foiling probably worked better the smaller it went. Here is some text at the bottom of my letterhead. It's around 10pt size I think, and you can see how clear the foiling has come out.

These last two images are from the larger sized logo's I tested. Again, they work reasonably well, but don't look half as good as the smaller ones. The smaller the better, in my opinion.

Spot Varnish

When experimenting, I had a happy accident when I used the foil the wrong way round. When I did this, it applied a clear varnish over the top of the black which you can't really tell that well from the photographs. This was good because I could keep the colour printed underneath while just adding a gloss finish. This could come in handy for this project and in future.

Final

For the final letterhead idea, I decided to combine the spot varnish and the foiling. For the logo at the top and address at the bottom, I added a varnish over the black so that they would still tie in with my original ideas. For the stamp, I added the gold foil over the top so that this would stand out over the body copy of the letter.
